The scientific evidence is irrefutable: can we really afford NOT to meditate?
To appreciate why meditation and mindfulness are important, we need to start from the very beginning and understand the evolution of fear. Our brains evolved 200,000 years ago, primed for survival: fight, flight or freeze. But of all the possible threats, from environmental disasters to deadly viruses, the greatest fear is now ignited more than ever: that of being excluded and no longer belonging. And as you’d expect, the modern tech explosion has thrown continuous gasoline onto this ancient flame.
The distinction between our ‘persona’ and ‘self’ has never been more prominent, with many people sporting multiple personas in different social and work settings, not to mention social media accounts. But along the way, we also seem to have forgotten the importance of embracing our authentic selves: the you behind closed doors, the you who dances like nobody’s watching (or hibernates beneath your duvet).
The amount of time and energy spent maintaining these numerous unauthentic personas can lead to cognitive dissonance. No wonder life can feel so overwhelming and exhausting.
So, the question is: have we really evolved? Or have we devolved and disconnected - from nature, from ourselves, and from each other?
